Organize and direct the Division of Environmental Health to minimize environmental health problems via law enforcement and education, and maximize the potential for a community free of health hazards and nuisances.  Prioritize inspector workload or assignments for a given program.  Train other inspectors or orient Sanitarians to the technical aspects of the program.  Monitor job performance and productivity of assigned inspectors and staff.  Work with and educate individuals and businesses in complying with health codes and regulations.  Work with businesses and individuals in mitigating environmental health problems.  Issue correction notices and write letters to obtain corrections.  Participate in All Hazards Emergency Preparedness, Response Readiness and Recovery planning and related training sessions, as well as tabletop exercises and functional drills to improve skills of inspectors and Sanitarians to test the plans and rate performance.   Assist in some aspects of hazardous materials response.  B.S. in Public Health, Environmental Science or a closely related field with a minimum of one to three years’ experience conducting public health inspections required.  Possess Certification as Massachusetts Registered Sanitarian or eligible to obtain certification within eighteen months of hire.  Possess current Food Handler’s Certification.

Worcester Regional MRC Coordinator

The Worcester Regional Medical Reserve Corps (WRMRC) is seeking a contracted Coordinator that serves as the leader and program expert for the Worcester Regional Medical Reserve Corps (WRMRC).
Description:
The WRMRC is part of a national network of volunteers dedicated to responding to emergencies, supplementing public health and local emergency resources as well as promoting healthy living throughout the year. The WRMRC Coordinator informs citizens of services and recruits volunteers. The Coordinator supervises volunteer training, performance, scheduling and utilization while working closely with community groups and agencies.  As the coordinator is expected to respond to unforeseen events at any given time, extensive availability including nights and weekends is a crucial component to the job. Position will average approximately 30hrs/week.

Qualification Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in public health, health policy, health management, social sciences or a related discipline from an accredited college or university plus a minimum of one year responsible work experience in the fields of public health, emergency health management or a related field. An individual must be experienced in the use of spreadsheets, and databases and also must be NIMS certified in IS – 100, IS – 700. Individuals must be adept with using Microsoft Office software, must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Additionally, interest, experience, and commitment for volunteerism and community building, with attention to detail, accuracy, detail-oriented, highly-organized and follow-through in an independent, responsible manner is required. Applicants must be proficient in speaking to community groups, public health and healthcare professionals along with the ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely in oral and written form. The possession and ability to maintain a valid driver’s license and have use of a personal vehicle is required.

Commissioner of Public Health

The City of Worcester, the second largest city in New England with a population of over 180,000 residents, seeks an experienced professional for the position of Commissioner of Public Health.  This is a senior management position that serves as a member of the City Manager’s Executive Cabinet and reports to the City Manager and Board of Health.  The Commissioner of Public Health will also have the distinct opportunity to be considered for a faculty position at the University of Massachusetts Medical School located in the City of Worcester.

The Commissioner directs all medical, nursing, environmental health, community health, and other public health services in the City of Worcester. Utilizes an inter-disciplinary staff with efforts directed toward community assessment and health education, program design, program evaluation, resource allocation, environmental protection, and inter-agency organization of health related activities.  Serves as lead community resource on communicable disease and health risk reduction. Advises physicians and others within and outside the Department on matters and problems relating to preventive medicine and public health.  The successful candidate will be a force for change while leading the effort to implement the recommendations of the City of Worcester Public Health Task Force which is available for review at www.worcesterma.gov.

The ideal candidate is a proven leader with a commitment to excellence, team work, exemplary customer service, and professionalism in order to lead a knowledgeable staff and develop innovative programs to enhance the delivery of service.   Candidates must have a thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and current developments in public health administration; ability to communicate and articulate health and safety matters to the general public; ability to read and analyze public health studies and reports; understanding of the coalition-building process involved in the development of public policies; familiarity with health and housing codes; and knowledgeable of federal and state grant application processes and sound fiscal administration. Minimum Requirements: M.D. and 10 or more years experience in public health. Preferred Requirements: M.D. and Masters Degree in Public Health plus 10 or more years experience in public health, of which 5 years must be in program management, supervision/administration.

Worcester Regional Tobacco Control Collaborative
Youth Worker

The City of Worcester’s Division of Public Health, in collaboration with the Worcester Regional Tobacco Control Collaborative (WRTCC) is looking for youth to assist with compliance checks in Worcester and 17 surrounding cities and towns. The individual will be trained, accompanied by a certified tobacco control inspector, instructed to visit each establishment that sells tobacco and attempt to buy a designated tobacco product. Applicants must be between the ages of 15 to 17 to participate in tobacco compliance checks.   This is a part time position on an as needed basis. Hourly rate is $10 per hour. We are looking for individuals who have free time during after school hours and occasionally on the weekends. EOE/AA employer.

Director of Public Health

The Town of Stoneham (population 24,000) is seeking qualified applications for the position of Director of Public Health. The position works under the administrative direction of the Stoneham Board of Health. The Health Director operates and manages the day to day operations of the Board of Health Department and works in accordance with applicable provisions of the Massachusetts General Laws, State Sanitary Codes, local ordinances and Board of Health rules and regulations.

Responsibilities include but not limited to; Site plans, promotes and coordinates all public health services, community sanitation programs, influenza clinics and infectious and communicable disease prevention programs. The Health Director will oversee all permits and licensing, site plan review, prepare annual budget, participation in emergency preparedness planning and will conduct the following inspections; all food establishments, public/semi public swimming pools, housing, and recreational camps. The Director will also investigate all nuisance, housing and noisome trade complaints and will provide professional expertise to the Board of Health.

Minimum Requirements include; a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, environmental science or related environmental health field; three to five years experience in a supervisory position of Public Health. Should possess the following licenses; Massachusetts Registered Sanitarian (RS), Registration as a Certified Health Officer (CHO), Certified Pool Operator and Certified Food Manager. Should posses a Massachusetts Class D License. Salary Range is $55,000 to $65,000 based on qualification. Deadline to apply is March 12, 2010.
