The Occupational Health Surveillance Program of the
Massachusetts Department of Public Healthis seeking qualified candidates to interview for the position of Epidemiologist II. Attached, please find a summary flyer and the official posting from the state website. The Health Office of Human Resources will be accepting applications through July 2nd.
The incumbent of this position will serve as Senior Epidemiologist in the Occupational Health Surveillance Program responsible for oversight of analysis of surveillance data and epidemiological research on work-related injuries and illnesses in Massachusetts. Specifically, she/he will be responsible for the analysis of data from surveillance systems for select work-related illnesses and injuries, such as work-related fatalities, work-related injuries to teens, work-related asthma, and needle stick injuries among hospital workers and for epidemiological investigations into occupational risk factors for injuries and chronic diseases using a wide variety of state data bases including, for example, hospitalization and emergency department data, workers’ compensation records , the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and cancer incident reports. She/he will also be responsible for: the design and implementation of surveillance research studies; evaluating alternative sources of data for occupational health surveillance; developing new approaches to assessing occupational health disparities; and monitoring state occupational health indicators. She/he will supervise the work of staff and contracted epidemiologists and research assistants; provide technical assistance to other program staff regarding survey and study design, sampling and variance estimation, selection of appropriate analytic methods and interpretation of study findings, prepare reports of surveillance and research findings for departmental and professional publications, and advise the overall program on use of data to identify intervention priorities to reduce occupational health risks in the Commonwealth. He/she will also assist the Director of OHSP in overall program planning and direction and in grant writing and management, and will carry out other duties as required.
Preference will be given to applicants with the following experience:
• Use of epidemiological methods for occupational and/or environmental health research.
• Familiarity with the various standard coding schemes and methods for categorizing exposure and populations at risk used in occupational health research.
• Use of multivariate statistics such as logistic regression and path analysis.
• Three years of programming experience in SAS.
• Working familiarity with data large data sets.

The Region 3A Northeast Public Health Coalition consists of fourteen communities in northeastern Massachusetts. The Coalition requires the assistance of part-time, contract health professionals to serve on an as-needed basis under its Emergency Preparedness, MDPH contract. Said professionals will assist in completing health inspections, public health planning and reporting, and in various clinical and other services. Contractors may be called for during regular staff vacations, to assist during public health emergencies, or to supplement staffing as needed. The number of contracts to be offered will depend on need and the availability of MDPH funds.
